Cleaning Up Our Act with “Clean the World”

Ever wonder what happens to all those little soaps and shampoo bottles you leave behind in hotel rooms?  The ones you barely use?

Truth is they often end up in already overflowing landfills where they contaminate already fragile groundwater systems.  What a waste, what a disaster.  Meantime, impoverished people around the world die every day from infection and disease because they don’t have access to soap.

Doesn’t compute does it.

In North America we hear health authorities harping “wash your hands” all the time – why?  Because studies show that simple hand washing substantially reduces the spread of disease.

But in countries like Haiti, Guatemala and Africa, essential items for hand washing are unavailable for millions of people.  Which means millions die – in fact 3.5 million children under the age of 5 will die this year alone.  What’s worse is these deaths could be prevented by up to 65% through hand washing with simple bar soap.

That’s where Clean the World comes in.  With a goal to save one million lives each year, this non-profit organization partners with hotels, resorts, and major Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s) like World Vision, distributing recycled soap products to over 50 countries worldwide – 230 tons of soap, shampoo and hotel amenities in 2009 to be exact.

While Pacific Sands is pleased to provide guests with Gilchrist & Soames fine line of toiletries, we’re even more proud to join their strategic alliance with Clean the World’s Hospitality Recycling Program

Effective immediately, our Housekeeping Team now sorts unused soap and containers for the Clean the World Team to collect, distribute and educate.

We’re inspired by our environment at this resort – it’s a mandate and philosophy that guides every decision we make.  But we’re always looking for new ways to up our eco-ante which is why when brilliant initiatives like Clean the World come along, we don’t just get on board we roll-up-our-sleeves and get excited!
