2nd Annual Bruhwiler Kids Surf Classic – Sept. 19th
Free, fun and open to kids aged 0-18, there will be some “future surf stars” that just like to splash in the waves, but lots that like to compete. In fact, last years inaugural event had over 70 kids from all over Vancouver Island participating in five separate divisions.Using a classic heat/judging panel format for the competitions and a non-judged “Open Expression Session” for funsters on the sidelines, every child gets an award and prizes. As Canada’s Surf Capital, it’s all about community and celebrating Tofino’s surf culture.
The event was founded by Catherine Bruhwiler, local surf champion and the visionary behind Tofino Paddle Surf. When asked why she created this signature Kids Surf Classic, she said:
“When I was a kid growing up in Tofino, there was only one, maybe two kids' surf contests a year. We would work so hard training for 20 minutes of surfing and it was over. I remember being so bummed.
“But I’ll tell you what, there’s a next generation of surfers in Canada that are so talented. We want to showcase that and at the same time, it’s an awesome opportunity to get families out for a day at the beach with their kids, just surfing and hanging out. We love the fun vibe versus competitive vibe.
“We’re also doing online registration this year, and we’re already about 75% full from kids from all over so that’s exciting!”
Pre-registration is mandatory and (as Catherine said, limited) so if you have surf-happy kids then get in on the fun and head here to register now. And don’t worry about equipment, it will be offered to kids who don’t have their own.POSTER ART EXHIBITION
As part of the frothy festivities, kids were invited to create art for this year’s event poster. Submissions have been showcased over the past few months on the event website as well as the Facebook event page – and one artist's work was randomly drawn for the poster art.
