It’s child’s play at Pacific Sands Beach Resort
This spring and summer, Pacific Sands Beach Resort partners with the Raincoast Education Society to offer a new kind of West Coast kids camp. Children get their feet wet and their hands in the sand as educators deliver quality outdoor programming around themes such as Otters and Whales; Salmon; Animal Tracking; Intertidal Games and Rainforest Scavenger Hunts. One day they could be learning about a whale’s baleen or how to hunt for treasures in the rainforest, and the next day they might learn to make their own fishing rod. The programs keep children engaged and entertained by incorporating natural history, first nations culture, and art, all in the West Coast outdoors.
Dining ‘in’ at Pacific Sands
All this surf and sand can tucker a person right out, and sometimes guests just don’t want to get dressed (in the best flip-flops, of course) for a meal in town. Fortunately, when easy and effortless are on the menu, Pacific Sands Beach Resort offers an abundance of culinary options for guests who want to eat in. Have a continental breakfast, with homemade granola and fresh-baked goodies delivered to the door, or order a picnic to go. There’s always the ‘do it yourself’ option. Pick up some grocery basics along with a fresh-pulled espresso drink at Beans on the Beach at Guest Services. That’s also where guests will find tasty menu options — like Southwest White Bean & Chicken Chili or Lasagna Bolognaise — from Zagat-recognized SOBO Restaurant To Go, or pre-order a dinner that can be easily heated in your in-suite kitchen. Nature’s Greatest Waterpark
The real draw when visiting Vancouver Island’s west coast is nature — and there is no shortage of ways to take it in, from ocean fishing and whale watching to riding the waves. Pacific Sands Beach Resort has partnered with several local adventure operators to ensure you enjoy the very best the Pacific Rim has to offer. Catch a floatplane ride to Hot Springs Cove, where guests can soak in a series of sulphur-heated pools that cascade to the ocean, or take the boat ride of a lifetime to see a pod of whales breaching or bears beachcombing. Both Jamie’s Whaling Station and West Coast Aquatic Safaris will get guests where they want to go. If it’s wave riding you’re after, Surf Sister can introduce both women and men to the sport of surfing in a safe, fun, and supportive environment, and offers advanced technique classes too. Finally, if guests are in the mood for some two-wheeled locomotion, Pacific Sands has its own fleet of cushy cruiser bikes for perfect pedaling on the Tofino Bike Path, which runs right from the resort into town.
Destination Dining — Authentically West Coast
For such a tiny town at the edge of the Pacific Ocean, Tofino is blessed with a surprising abundance of top-notch eateries; it has become a culinary mecca for many city chefs looking for a lower-key lifestyle. Take a seat in the Spotted Bear Bistro for well-crafted cuisine made with quality products available on Vancouver Island, or slide into a booth at cozy Shelter restaurant and nosh on approachable, organic cuisine.
Since 2002, SOBO restaurant — short for Sophisticated Bohemian — has been winning hearts and taste buds with fresh, vibrant food, like humpback prawns and polenta fries; while even on a rainy day, Tacofino, the outdoor food truck, is the place to be around lunchtime for luscious, high-rise fish tacos. You should also dress for the weather while visiting the outdoor Wildside Grill, where commercial fisherman Jeff Mikus and professional chef Jesse Blake team up to deliver the freshest seafood around; and if you want a meal to go, don’t miss chef Tim May’s RedCan Gourmet where a beautiful open concept commercial kitchen allows you to interact with the chefs as they create inspired west coast dishes.
A natural resort
Just one glance at the crashing waves and sky-high conifers of Cox Bay and the need for sustainable practices that preserve the delicate natural balance of this magical place is clear. From a geo-exchange system and the use of wood killed by pine beetles to participation in the Clean the World program, eco-friendly is an understatement at Pacific Sands Beach Resort; which is why the Green Key Eco-Rating Program has awarded it a 4 out of 5 Key rating for excellence in environmental and social responsibility in all operational areas. Green Key is a graduated rating system designed to recognize hotels and resorts around the globe that are committed to improving their environmental performance. With the recent rollout of its Master Resort Development Plan, Pacific Sands is committed to even more sustainable policies and to striving for that fifth Key.
Celebrating over 40 Years Through the Senses
Dining 'In' just got tastier with the launch of Flavours of Tofino Cookbook.Pacific Sands Beach Resort celebrates over 40 years of memories to last a lifetime, dishing out the launch of its 'Flavours of Tofino' commemorative cookbook.
Over 40 years ago, the Pettinger Family had a vision to build a resort that offered a true home-away-from- home experience. Their goal was to create a special place for families, friends and loved ones to escape, relax and enjoy that deep breath of Pacific West Coast air. Today, families and loved ones gather and experience the scents and sounds of the pounding surf. "From vacations to weddings, to the ashes of loved ones," comments Dave Pettinger, "we have been a part of the lives of families that have been visiting for generations." Food has always been a pathway to the soul and the Pettingers certainly had big seaside family dinners in mind when they equipped Pacific Sands Beach Resort as Tofino's only all-suite oceanfront resort with fully equipped kitchens. With over 40 years spotlighting family, romance and connecting with nature's surrounding underway, the award-winning Pacific Sands Beach Resort launches the 'Flavours of Tofino' cookbook. The resort has brought together Tofino's finest chefs and eateries along with a collection of their recipes and Pettinger family classics to 'raise a glass' of shared memories around the table for generations.
Tofino – A Force of Nature
At the north end of the Esowista Peninsula sits the village of Tofino, a tranquil community notched in among sweeping bays and the towering rainforest on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The town is part of the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Biosphere Reserve, an internationally recognized area that includes terrestrial and marine environments and extends from the southern boundary of the Long Beach Unit of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve to just north of Estevan Point. The reserve includes approximately 350,000 hectares of which nearly 83,000 hectares are marine. It’s no surprise that the stunning vistas, kilometres of pristine sandy beaches and amazing wildlife draw more than 1 million visitors a year, making Tofino one of B.C.’s premier vacation destinations. Visitors can spend the day strolling beaches, sampling local cuisine, taking an exhilarating eco-tour or shopping for original west coast art. There’s nowhere like it. Visit Tourism Tofino online.
