CALENDAR OF TOFINO EVENTS

- Storm Watching SeasonSeptember 23, 2012 - April 30
Storm watching season extends from October to March. During the storm watching season there are usually multiple storms each month with horizontal rain, swells of up to 20 metres and 90km an hour winds. Storm watching doesn't really require anything of the observer but stillness and wonder. Storm watching is best advantaged from one of our ocean-front rooms where a good book, a fireplace and maybe a blanket across your lap are really all you need to experience the fury and the force of the pounding Pacific Ocean on the other side of your rattling, double paned window. Or for the more adventurous, head out into the storm to experience the power of the wind, to observe the giant waves, and to hear the symphony of the wind and waves.
- Grey Whale MigrationMarch 16 - February 24
Its the annual return of migrating Pacific grey whales to the coastal waters of the communities of Tofino, Ucluelet and Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. An estimated 20,000 grey whales make the journey each year from the Baja Peninsula’s breeding and calving lagoons in Mexico toward their summer feeding grounds in the Bering and Chukchi Seas near the Arctic. The migrating grey whales join resident grey whales, orcas, humpbacks and the occasional minke that can be seen in these Pacific Northwest waters any time of year off of the West Coast of Vancouver Island.
- Pacific Rim Whale FestivalMarch 16 - 24
Every March, spring splashes into Canada with the Pacific Rim Whale Festival!
Join the fun on the shores of Vancouver Island's wild west coast, as we celebrate the arrival of upwards of 20,000 grey whales on their northbound migration from the Baja Peninsula to Alaska's Bering Strait and beyond.
Come experience the wonders and charm of the Annual Pacific Rim Whale Festival, with over 40 events taking place throughout the coastal towns of Tofino and Ucluelet and the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.
It's an all-out celebration of our coastal lives! It’s about grey whale and marine life education, inspirational talks and interpretive walks, children's fun for the small and culinary events for the tall, First Nations cultural workshops and more - come and experience a coastal tradition!
