Grillin’ and Chillin’ at Surfside Grill

With a bustling, new seaside kitchen and a steady stream of beach food-lovers, Surfside Grill is settling into its new Pacific Sands location. As the sister site to Tofino’s wildly popular Wildside Grill, commercial fisherman Jeff Mikus and chef Jesse Blake are enjoying their new Cox Bay vantage point, complete with Saturday night BBQ events and the odd whale sighting.

“The other day, something caught the eye of one of our staff as he was serving a guest,” laughed Jeff. “He looked out into the bay and saw a pod of Orca whales swim past. You know you’re somewhere special when that happens.”

Featuring delicious, casual fare including fish & chips, fish tacos, burgers and catch-of-the-day specials, Surfside Grill serves up classic beach food the way it should be.

But before you think it’s “just any” beach food, think again. Jeff and Jesse have a very fresh approach to food:

Fish & shrimp – most of the fresh seafood you’ll enjoy at Surfside Grill is caught by Jeff, just hours before in coastal waters. So basically, from the boat, to the kitchen, to your plate. It’s that fresh.

Oysters – the boys work with Outlandish Shellfish Guild, including eight family shellfish farms in the pristine waters off Discovery Island and remote Desolation Sound.

Meats – all beef, chicken, pork and specialty meats are sourced from local farms through the Tofino Ucluelet Culinary Guild. Six years ago, Jeff and Jesse were part of the movement to form this community food sourcing organization that bulk-buys and delivers high quality, locally grown products to Tofino and Ucluelet restaurants, resorts and grocers.

In short, their commitment to quality and the relationships they’ve established with their suppliers is the “special sauce” that’s built the following of raving fans that can’t get enough.

As for dessert, the latest addition to the Surfside Grill is soft ice cream. Who doesn’t love soft ice cream and floats? Especially at the beach? Kids big and small are lining up.

And whether you enjoy the communal seating around one of four fire-pits, take it to the beach, or head back to your suite, it’s all steps from your beachfront Tofino accommodations.

In fact, as the first ever onsite restaurant for Pacific Sands, Surfside Grill is not only convenient for guests, it’s open year-round and fully equipped to cater onsite weddings and events.
