In fact, Clayoquot Sound was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations in 2000. This means protecting our precious ecosystem is beyond best practices — it’s a mandate.

Coastal Evergreens in the Fog - We're Planting Trees with Veritree

REFORESTATION WITH EVERY STAY

In partnership with veritree, we’re taking our commitment to positive environmental impacts to the next level by planting one tree for every stay to support reforestation in British Columbia regions impacted by wildfires. Not only will these trees act as carbon sinks, but they’ll also help to restore our ecosystems and support wildlife habitats.

The veritree platform tracks and verifies the planting and lifecycle of our trees. This provides us — and you — the assurance that our efforts are real, measurable, and impactful.

Since Earth Month in April 2024, Pacific Sands Beach Resort has been planting one tree for every confirmed booking.

  • To stop wasteful in-suite amenity bottles, we have installed locally produced Sea Wench Naturals haircare and body lotions in eco-friendly pumps
  • To eliminate waste from facial tissue boxes, we’ve launched Fox Fold sustainable bamboo products with refillable dispensers in all suites
  • Locally roasted Rhino coffee to ensure guests can enjoy quality, fresh coffee, while reducing our carbon footprint
  • Fireplace timers reduce energy consumption
  • Energy-saving power timers in the Oceanside building
  • Energy motion sensors in Beach Houses ensure power only when necessary
  • Our “Don’t Wash Us Up” program saves water and energy on unnecessary towel washing
  • Old linens get either donated or recycled
  • Low-flow aerators save water and energy

Eco-Partners + Projects

Surfrider Pacific Rim

With a mission to “protect and enjoy the world’s ocean, waves and beaches, for all people,” we proudly support Surfrider Pacific Rim‘s campaigns and programs, including Hold On To Your Butt cigarette recycling canisters throughout the Resort, and Love Your Beach Clean community clean-up events as well as our onsite Marine Debris Bin.

Coastal Restoration Society

Supporting the resource management and environmental stewardship goals of First Nations, Provincial, and Federal Governments, Pacific Sands periodically helps the Coastal Restoration Society with Clayoquot Sound clean-up efforts, including gathering debris from docks, float homes, and derelict boats.

Raincoast Education Society

From full-scale UNESCO Biosphere Reserve projects to Summer Kids Camps right here at Pacific Sands, the mandate of the Raincoast Education Society is to protect shorelines, wildlife, and sustainable living. This future-focussed group specializes in youth and adult education via a broad range of high-quality educational and interpretive programs such as field school, a speaker series, summer camps, school programs, and events focused on the natural environment, cultures, and communities of the Clayoquot and Barkley Sound region.

Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks

With a goal to uphold the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations’ relationship and responsibilities to its homeland—including guiding, balancing, and informing newcomers and tourists—Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks restore rivers impacted by logging, revitalize salmon habitats, remediate dune-grass habitats, maintain trails, and more. Ask our Guest Services Team about donating 1% of your total stay towards an Ecosystem Service Fee focussed on reinvesting in the people and ecology that comprise Tofino lands or donate directly on the Tribal Parks website.

Every Drop Counts

In Tofino, water shapes everything, from the forests to the waves at Cox Bay. As summers grow drier and busier, this vital resource is under increasing pressure.

During your stay, we invite you to use water mindfully and be part of a long tradition of stewardship. Every drop comes from the old-growth forests protected by the Tla-o-qui-aht (ƛaʔuukʷiʔatḥ) Tribal Parks.

The District of Tofino greatly appreciates your efforts to preserve our natural resources. Help us make every drop count!

Small Actions, Big Impact

There are other small ways you can help conserve water during your stay.

Please consider:

  • Skipping baths and minimizing your time in the shower
  • Turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth, shaving or washing your hands
  • Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily
  • Wash fruits and veggies in a bowl instead of under running water
  • Skipping daily towel and linen changes if not needed
  • Using the dishwasher or in-suite laundry only with a full load
