Whether you’re an avid storm watcher, a Weather Network fan, or an armchair meteorologist, there’s something utterly captivating about Tofino storm watching.

When is Storm Watching Season in Tofino?

It all kicks off in October, when the Pacific Ocean begins to stir and the weather shifts. From then until April, an average of 10 to 15 powerful storms roll in each month—each one offering a different kind of spectacle.

And as seasoned guests will tell you, no two storms are ever the same.

Curious what makes these storms so different? We were, too. So we dug into the science behind the show. Here’s what we uncovered…

The Weather Systems Behind Tofino Storm Watching

According to NAV Canada (the good people who manage 18 million square kilometres of Canadian and oceanic airspace), three main types of weather systems are carried into British Columbia over the Pacific Ocean, producing our day-to-day weather:

  1. Low Pressure Systems – Air moves counter-clockwise and is forced upward, creating clouds and rain.
  2. High Pressure Systems – Air moves clockwise and sinks, usually bringing clear, sunny skies.
  3. Frontal Systems – Boundaries where two air masses meet, causing abrupt weather changes.

The 3 Types of Tofino Storms

During the summer, storm systems occasionally appear. But during Tofino’s storm season—between October and April—low-pressure systems dominate, bringing the drama in three types of storms.

1. Gulf of Alaska Low
This storm system remains well offshore, forming as a “frontal wave” between cold, northern air and warmer, southern air. It travels eastward, gathering strength and size before swinging up toward the Alaskan Panhandle. Meanwhile, the trailing front hits Tofino, bringing clouds, rainfall, and sustained winds of 35–50 knots (that’s 65–93 km/h or 40–57 mph).

2. Coastal Low
Not as frequent, but often more intense, Coastal Lows are fast-forming, high-impact storms. Meteorologists may even call them a “weather bomb” or “bomb cyclone” because they can escalate from mild to severe in as little as nine hours. These storms often deliver fierce southeasterly winds of 70–100 knots (130–185 km/h or 80–115 mph), followed by torrential rain. They’re wild—and they make for unforgettable storm watching.

3. Combination
Sometimes, Mother Nature decides to show off. These hybrid storms combine elements of both Gulf of Alaska Lows and Coastal Lows. They’ll swirl around Alaska, swing southeast, and re-strengthen as they charge toward Tofino—bringing very strong winds, intense rainfall, and all-out atmospheric theatre that’s now been termed an “atmospheric river.” (Translation: quite a show!)

Wind Speeds: What’s a Knot, Anyway?

When the forecast calls for “50 knots,” what does that actually mean?

A knot (kt) is a unit used to measure wind and water speed—especially at sea.
