Surf n’Turf
Hard to believe it’s already been a year since Tofino was in the spotlight for Canada’s first ever international surf competition. It was the 2009 O’Neill Cold Water Classic and local hero Peter Devries tore up the waves and won on home turf.
Talk about making a surf statement!
Peter put on an epic, winning performance in front of all his local family, friends, the world for that matter. Stores closed, people flocked, international cameras took their positions and Tofino born and raised Peter took the NHL of surfing right here in Tuff City. Check out the video.
Does it get any more “storybook ending” than that?
With the return of the O’Neill Cold Water Classic October 9-15, 2010, the spotlight is once again on Tofino and Peter…and we couldn’t be more excited!
The waves are getting big and so is the buzz.
In a recent Tofino Westerly News article Peter talked about growing up on Chesterman Beach where his dad got him surfing at 7 years old. “It was really cool,” said Devries on last year’s competition. “It’s always nice to see other good surfers surfing the waves you surf every day. It was a fun event for me, that’s for sure.” Anticipating this year’s event, Peter goes on to say, “I’m definitely looking forward to it again.”
