Why Storm Season Is So Spectacular
You truly have to see it to believe it. Powerful weather systems rolling in from the open Pacific. Waves thundering onto the shoreline. Wind whipping through towering trees. Clouds shifting by the minute, occasionally parting to reveal a bright patch of blue or even a golden sunset.
Every storm has its own personality. One might bring steady rain and rhythmic surf, while the next delivers spectacular waves and salty ocean spray. Between systems, the beach can become surprisingly calm, giving you space for a quiet walk beneath moody skies.

What to Pack
A little preparation makes wet-weather wandering much more fun.
Every suite at Pacific Sands Beach Resort comes with rain slickers for you to use during your stay. Plan to bring an extra waterproof jacket, rain pants, and sturdy waterproof footwear with good grip. Warm layers, extra socks, gloves and a toque will help keep the chill away.
A small waterproof bag is handy for your phone, camera and anything else you’d prefer not to soak. But leave the umbrella at home. West Coast winds have a habit of turning one into modern art!

How to Watch a Storm Safely
The ocean deserves admiration and plenty of space. Always check the weather conditions before heading outside, then follow any posted signs or safety notices.
For safe Tofino storm watching, choose a wide stretch of beach and stay well back from the water. Watch for changing tides, surging waves and driftwood, which can move without warning. Keep children and dogs close, and never turn your back on the ocean.
Most importantly: watch from the beach, not the rocks. Rocky outcrops, logs and exposed headlands can become slippery or be reached by unexpectedly large waves. Fortunately, you don’t need to perch anywhere precarious to enjoy the show. Cox Bay offers expansive views with plenty of room to take it all in from a safe distance.
And when conditions call for staying indoors? Settle into your suite and watch nature’s greatest waterpark from somewhere warm and dry. Either way, you’re as beachfront as it gets.
Your Post-Storm Ritual
The best storm watching outings end somewhere cozy.
Hang up your rain gear, put on your softest socks and warm up by the fireplace. Make coffee, tea or hot chocolate, then settle in by the window while the rain taps against the glass. A long bath is another fine way to thaw out after a blustery beach walk, especially when you have nowhere else to be.
The ultimate post-storm ritual? Slip into the private hot tub in your hot tub suite, where warm water, cool ocean air and the sound of crashing waves make a perfect combination. Imagine watching the hot tub steam rise into the coastal mist while the storm rages around you.
Later, enjoy wood-fired comfort food at our on-site eatery, Saltrose, with convenient takeout available if you’d rather stay cozy.
Or venture into Tofino for dinner. The local dining scene offers everything from laidback favourites to beautifully prepared West Coast cuisine, often featuring locally caught seafood.
Then return to your suite, pour something lovely and see what the ocean is up to.
Build Your Storm-Watching Escape
For a two-night getaway:
- Day 1: Arrive in time to settle in and take an easy beach walk before dinner.
- Day 2: Follow the weather’s lead. Watch the waves from your suite, venture out during a calmer window and return for a fireside afternoon. Make the evening about good food, warm drinks, a fire pit, and absolutely no rushing.
- Day 3: Ease into the morning with delicious local coffee and one last look at the waves before heading home.
Have three nights to play with?
An extra night gives you more room for the unexpected. Add a rainforest walk, enjoy a leisurely morning in town, book a sauna session, arrange for a massage treatment, or plan another long stretch of beach time.
Because conditions change quickly, an extra day also gives you a better chance of seeing several sides of the coast, from wonderfully wild to completely serene.
There’s no need to fill every hour. Storm season is an invitation to slow down, tune into the weather and enjoy whatever the day brings.
